Leticia’s Dreams of a Future
May 2025
At just 13 years old, Leticia’s life took a painful and unexpected turn. One day, she found herself alone on the streets of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania. She was confused, frightened, and unsure of what would happen next. Her mother, facing deep-rooted fears and beliefs, had made the heart-wrenching decision to leave Leticia behind, believing her to be a source of misfortune. For Leticia, that must have been devastating. But her story was far from over.
A compassionate stranger, moved by Leticia’s desperate situation, stepped in and ensured she was placed in an orphanage in the heart of the city. There, Leticia found shelter, food, and safety. But, what she longed for most was something far greater: a family, a sense of belonging, and the chance to go back to school.
She had dreams of hope and a future.
For a full year, Leticia remained at the orphanage. She often spoke of her dreams; especially her dream of becoming a nurse. She had the heart and determination, but school felt out of reach.
Thankfully, GCA was hard at work…
All the while, behind the scenes, Azza, a dedicated Social Welfare Officer, was working tirelessly to change Leticia’s story. With patience, persistence, and partnership with Global Child Advocates, Azza had begun the careful process of Leticia’s case management. Azza worked to trace Leticia’s family, sought reconciliation, and explored every possibility for safe reintegration. At one point, Azza managed to speak with Leticia’s mother, but she was not ready to welcome her daughter home.
Still, Azza did not give up. Eventually, a breakthrough came. Azza was able to contact Leticia’s extended family: her uncle, aunt, and sister, who live nearly 270 miles from Dar es Salaam. When Azza spoke with them, it was clear that there would be a warm welcome waiting Leticia. Her relatives were ready, willing, and open-hearted. Following a thorough family assessment conducted by Azza and the team at Global Child Advocates, it was determined that Leticia could be safely reunified with her family. Leticia would finally have a home!
The journey was long, but every mile was filled with hope. As the car made its way through the lush Tanzanian countryside, Leticia’s eyes sparkled with joy. Her voice broke the silence as she said,
“I’m very happy to be reunited with my relatives. I never thought I would see them again. For a year I spent my life in an orphanage without knowing when I’d be back home. Now I am going to see my uncle, aunt, and sister.”
Her relatives embraced her with love and dignity. And to Leticia’s delight, they enrolled in school, bringing her one step closer to her dream of becoming a nurse.
Six months later, GCA staff returned to check in on her progress. Leticia’s transformation was nothing short of remarkable~ she is thriving!
Leticia is now in Standard 6 at school, proudly sharing that she had earned first-class marks in science, mathematics, and Kiswahili. Her school headmaster spoke highly of her, praising her dedication and kindness. Leticia beamed with pride as she welcomed the GCA staff, eager to show us her books, her report card, and her big dreams for the future.
Her family, once uncertain, is now deeply proud. They are standing by her and supporting her every step of the way.
Leticia’s story is a powerful reminder of what is possible when we believe in children, even in the most difficult moments. With compassionate support, committed professionals, and the strength of community, children can thrive in safe and loving families- not institutions.
