Tanzania Context

Tanzania, officially the United Republic of Tanzania, is a country in East Africa covering 947,300 square kilometers with a population of 61.7 million. Half of Tanzania’s population (30.2 million) are children aged 0-17.

Seventy-four percent of the Tanzania children are at risk of separating from their families and not reaching their full potential. Over 10,000 children are currently on the streets, with over 20,000 stuck in orphanages and thousands more in different forms of exploitation.

GCA strives to ensure that every child is protected in safe and caring families.

What we do

Advocacy

We engage key child care professional and technical networks to influence and establish shared understanding towards care reform in Tanzania, as well as to impact policy. Similarly, we equip government leaders at different levels, child welfare, social workforce, children’s homes and faith institutions with the knowledge and skills to actively prioritize family-based care for vulnerable children and those who have lost or are at risk of losing parental care.

Transforming Care

We work with local government authorities to assist orphanages redesign their programs towards family and community-based care. In doing so, we support child and family assessment, develop permanency strategies, and strengthen case management. We further support in recruiting, training, and monitoring foster families for short term care of children in need to reduce dependency on orphanages care.

Permanency

We collaborate with government authorities to guarantee that children who are currently separated from their original families are reintegrated from various alternative care settings wherever feasible. We also promote children who are eligible for adoption to find homes for their optimal development. We build capacities of government social workforce in case management, child protection, and alternative care.
